Even though I spend most of my craft time using My Digital Studio, I will always love the look and feel of a traditional handmade card. But this year with a brand new baby, handmade Christmas cards aren’t happening—not even a hybrid card. I’m sure many of you can relate; you know, those days when you would give anything for a shower, a maid, or (heaven help me) a nap! It’s then that you resignedly hang up your Martha Stewart hat and collapse on the couch, wondering if you actually brushed your teeth that morning.

So until Little Man #3 can get on the school bus with his brothers every morning, or at least stays on a regular nap schedule, I will be making my Christmas cards in MDS. And, lucky me, we have something new and fun this year—shaped postcards! When I read that Stampin’ Up would be offering these through their printing service I squealed with excitement! I’m not lying. It was a great big girly squeal! I’ve seen these postcards offered through other printing companies but they only offer pre-made designs. Talk about annoying! It’s not that they’re bad designs; it’s just that I want to be able to say I made the card myself, and I want complete control over all the elements, fonts, and papers. This year I get my wish. Those scalloped cards had my name written all over them!

I had a basic idea of how I wanted the card to look (mostly that the edges would be scalloped), but it wasn’t until I started looking through old projects that I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I found these tags that I made last year for our neighbor gifts.

I love them just as much as I did last year! It occurred to me that I could use part of the tag for my card. Not all of my friends and family have seen it yet and the ones who have might not even remember. All I had to do was save my design as a group. If you haven’t used this function before don’t worry, it’s pretty simple. Here are the steps:

Click on Arrange, then Select All. Once everything is highlighted, click Arrange and then Group.

Click on Arrange again, then Save Group.

You’ll be prompted to name your group. I like to use keywords that will help me remember the grouping.

The last step is to open a new project and then import your saved group.

Now you can ungroup your image and move things around wherever you like. Easy Peasy!

My background on the tag was a punch filled with paper from the Be Awesome download. To get the chevron pattern I duplicated the punch and then mirrored it. It was pretty easy to match up the stripes and create a whole new look with the same paper!

I love being able to put fun, random information about our family into our Christmas cards so the infographic style was perfect for me. It’s a great way to get a lot of information in a small space.  I used the Year End Review Infographic Postcard Template that was released last year. So. Much. Fun. I love this download! It has just the right amount of fun and randomness for me. Randomness . . . is that a word?

This download is mostly customizable. There are a few things that come as embellishments rather than stamps, and you can’t use multiple colors on one image. I found a way to get around that. For example, with the “35,000 cookies in a lifetime” I just copied and pasted in place each layer changing the color each time. After changing the color, I cropped the stamp for just the word(s) that I wanted in that particular color. Even though I pasted the images in place I did notice some overlap of colors but it was an easy fix. I just placed a square punch filled with white under the text to mask the color I didn’t want.

Not all of the graphics in the Year End Review kit fit our family so I made up a few of our own. I found some graphics in other kits like the car, record player, and headphones that worked perfectly. The ribbon/bar graph is a free graphic from Persnickety Prints.

So. I may not have time to sit and make 80+ Christmas cards by hand at this stage in my life, but I can open MDS and create one that still has just as much thought and love put into it. And the scalloped edge is quite lovely, if I do say so myself.

I hope you are home safe and warm this Christmas season enjoying the holiday spirit with loved ones. From our family to yours, Merry Christmas!
