Hey, everyone. With Facebook’s new timeline feature available to all, I thought I should revisit using My Digital Studio to design your timeline cover. If you recall, I designed a festive banner using the Day in the Life Kit back in November.
This time around, I figured out a little trick to help me design my banner. Facebook has designed timeline with a banner image size of 851 x 315 pixels. So, doing some quick math (I can hear some of you tuning out now – just jump to the next paragraph), that means I have a ratio of around 2.7 to 1. Since the Facebook banner will position my image with a fixed width, I’ll need to start with a project type that has a ratio smaller than 2.7 to 1 and design keeping my width fixed as well. That means some of my height will not be shown in my Facebook banner image.
So I used the “create your own” 10" x 5" calendar project to start, and plotted out my design area by resizing a square punch. I added the punch into my project and then sized it to 851 x 315 pixels by entering those figures in the punch settings. Then, I resized the punch by dragging the corners until it fit the width of my canvas. Tada! The proper ratio to design my Facebook banner image.
This time, I used the New Heights Kit, a new download this week, to show my yearning for spring.
And here is the final product.
So I expect to see lots of My Digital Studio created timeline banners on Facebook in the next few weeks. It’s so simple and easy to put your own stamp on Facebook.
And don’t miss the new downloads this week.

Comment by Kelly Birrell on August 30, 2012 at 7:24pm I'm confused. Did you make your design INSIDE of your punch?

Thanks, Julie.
You don't have to be a demonstrator to do the FB banner. If you own MDS you can use it in any way the program gives you options to share, including the jpeg (picture) option and upload it to FB or a blog. You cannot use it for commercial use, etc.
With the option to redesign FB banner, is it permissible for non demonstrators to use SU papers and things from MDS?
